More info available at LinkedIn, though I spend $10 bucks month for this gem, so stay for just a while.
Where I've Been
I've been doing big-brand creative, experience strategy & design, advertising, communications, sales and business development for world-class clients and agencies, where I've been both a part of, and a leader to, some pretty exceptional teams along the way.
I started in a software re-seller's cold warehouse; picking and packing software in plastic peanuts (my Ragged Dick story), and quickly moved indoors to become a salesman, writer and copy editor for their direct marketing catalog business. With a degree in journalism and a semester as a congressional press secretary's aide, I convinced the departing public relations director to hire me as a writer and Jr. Account Exec at a high-tech PR firm in Cambridge, MA.
From there, I moved along down the road; stopping and staying a while at some pretty neat places like Strategic Interactive Group, THINK New Ideas, PARTNERS & Simons, Digitas, MNET, Third Screen Media, Razorfish, SapientNitro, Publicis Sapient and Mobiquity.
What I Can Do
I lead teams in experience strategy and product design, storytelling, writing, brand development, content design, team and relationship building and the packaging and selling of it all. I'm a writer, producer, salesman, experience and content strategist, and always a strategic planner and partner—to my team and my clients. I’m versatile—as comfortable selling strategy and design as I am digital product engineering, delivery schedules, proposals, SOWs, or running a workshop.
I've got skill and will and an uncanny ability to fit into almost any situation with smart and intuitive grace and the desire to connect, learn, improve and win.
I can see problems early—before most can spot them—and through an unusually well-balanced mix of listening, communication, emotion and persuasion; identify and sell the solution.
I write, talk, listen, connect, present, tell stories, see and think critically, and I manage the team and the clock, to win.
What I believe
I’ve seen the comings and goings of a lot of special people—the ones flown in at great expense, from some company or agency that’s ‘better’ than ours to save the day. Those folks are gone. One person never has the answer or the ability to make it happen.
A true team however, has tremendous power and ongoing, limitless, potential. Teams practice together again and again. Teams refine their strengths and shore up their weaknesses. Teams play together every week, and win (and lose) together. Teams have chemistry, the wisdom of the pack, emotional connection and deep sense of ‘fit’—and if we can’t fit into a team or into a client’s business, (or our own company), it’s over.
I avoid the idea of distributed and decentralized teams, because they’re cover words for an internal capacity or staffing model deficiency—an amalgamation or approximation of a real team, like a Pro Bowl team, instead of a Super Bowl team. Hardly anyone cares about the Pro Bowl, but everyone loves a good Super Bowl. My advice to clients is understand who will be on your team and whether they have ever worked together before. If you can’t see or feel the chemistry, question it. True teams are committed—to you, themselves and one another—and that’s how you (and they) win. While Covid may have changed where we sit, it hasn’t changed the power and drive of a connected, ‘psychologically safe’, team.
Subject matter expertise (everyone wants SMEs) is almost never the magic bullet. Whether a team has ever created the experience at hand, is almost irrelevant—a good experience team will fit in, listen, find a way, and win. My teams have been equally successful creating personalized coffee experiences for Keurig, as we are donor advised fund experiences for Fidelity. As adept at creating an app for Mind Body yogis, as we are an app for State St. wholesalers to peddle mutual funds to financial advisors. As clear about B2B commerce for engineers to buy ADI micro-chips as we are B2C commerce for regular fellas to buy Schick razors. As good at creating health and aging videos for Philips Healthcare, as we are creating hard-working truck videos for Ram Trucks. And as good at orchestrating experiences for world-class EY consultants as we are Index experiences for Morningstar clients.
Where I'm At
I'm at Mobiquity, where recent engagements include experience strategy, design and product engineering engagements for EY, Morningstar, Wawa and Otsuka Pharmaceutical, to name just a few.
And we’re hiring, so if you're a designer, writer, product manager, engineer, or a PM who can wrangle teams and clients, reach out anytime, and we can talk.
you looking? I'm Listening.
